Causes of Amebiasis

The parasite resides in the wall of intestines infecting people. The infection can cause conditions like dysentery and colitis. It is contagious. Your chance of having this infection is higher when you have poor hygiene and the place you live is unclean.  Other triggers include:

• Malnutrition
• Cancer
• Drinking too much alcohol
• Pregnancy

Signs and symptoms of Amebiasis

Symptoms tend to appear 1-4 weeks after ingestion. Symptoms are often mild and can include:

• Stomach pain
• Loose stool
• Stomach cramp

In severe cases, symptoms may include:

• Bloody stool
• Stomach pain
• Fever
• Weakness
• Nausea
• Weight loss
• Vomiting
• Flatulence

The adverse effect of Amebiasis

In some cases, the parasite may invade other organs such as the liver and lungs. The skin around genitals, wounds and buttock may also become infected.

Preventive measures of Amebiasis

Proper sanitation is the key to prevent this infection. To prevent yourself from this parasite, keep the following in mind:

• Wash your hands thoroughly before eating and after using the toilet.
• Avoid drinking water from unknown sources. As much as possible drink purified water.
• Do not share towels and underwear.
• Disinfect your toilet often.
• Wash fruits and vegetables before eating and cooking them.
• Avoid eating raw foods and unpacked drinks.
• Avoid fountain drinks.
• Avoid foods sold by street vendors.

Anti-Amebiasis medicines

Anti-amoebic medicine includes:

• Tiniba – 500 mg
• Metrogyl – 400mg
• Seczole – 1000mg

Amebiasis diagnosis

Your doctor will check for the presence of parasites in your stool. Other test includes:

• Blood test to detect antibodies to the amoeba
• Checking the parasite’s genetic materials using the PCR technique
• Examining sample tissue from the large intestines

Treatment for Amebiasis

There is no over-the-counter drug available. Treatments are prescribed by a physician.  Your doctor may prescribe Metronidazole (Flagyl) for 10 days. Its either you’re going to take it by mouth or directly into the veins. Your doctor may also prescribe medicines for nausea and vomiting. To kill the amoeba in your intestines, your doctor may prescribe Luminal drug and paromomycin.
