Brompheniramine is anti-histamine that is readily available over the counter. It belongs to the class of drug known as propylamine. It’s a first generation antihistamine with a very high anticholinergic activity.
It is used to help temporarily relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, common colds and upper respiratory allergies such as sneezing, itchy and watery eyes and runny nose. It also treats allergic conjunctivitis, hives, skin allergies and insomnia. However, it should not be used to cause sleepiness in children. Brompheniramine is used alone or in combination with other drugs like dextromethorphan and phenylephrine.
How to Use It
Use Brompheniramine as directed by your physician. Do not use more than what is prescribed to you or longer than the required time of treatment. Take this medication orally with or without food. Take it with plenty of water. If you are using the chewable and liquid form, take it every 4 to 6 hours or as needed. For the extended-release tablet, take it every 8 to 12 hours.
Possible Side Effects of Brompheniramine
Stop using Brompheniramine if you have serious side effects like:
· Uneven heart rate
· Mood changes
· Urinating less than the usual
· Seizure, tremors
· Short breathe
Less serious side effects are:
· Dry mouth
· Dizziness
· Blurred vision
· Restless
· Chest congestion
· Nausea
· Headache
Brompheniramine may cause other side effects. Seek medical help if you have any unusual problems while using this product.
Getting the Best Result from Brompheniramine
· Do not use this for longer than 7 days in a row. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, consult your doctor right away.
· When using the liquid form, use the special measuring dose. Do not use the regular spoon.
· Do not use Brompheniramine if you have asthma, COPD and glaucoma.
· Children younger than 4 years of age should not use Brompheniramine.
· Ask your doctor if it is safe for you to use if you have kidney and liver disease, enlarged prostate and cough with mucus due to emphysema or bronchitis.
· Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while taking this medication.
· Brompheniramine can cause a decrease in sweating. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid heat stroke.
· Do not use Brompheniramine if you have severe constipation, unable to urinate and blockage in your stomach or intestines.
· This product does not cure or shorten the length of your common colds. It will only help relieve the symptoms of your condition.
